Lutheran Benefits Group, formerly known as Lutheran Health Care Group, was founded in 1991, by Karl W. Mueller. He was a General Agent with Lutheran Brotherhood at the time, and with the help of his son Keith W. Mueller an agent at Lutheran Trust, they created Lutheran Benefits Group.

At the time, Karl and Keith had long-standing relationships with the Lutheran High School Association, the Michigan and English Districts, and numerous Lutheran churches and schools. When their health insurance carrier withdrew from the state, these organizations faced a major challenge — employees were left to pay medical claims out of pocket and seek partial reimbursements that covered only what was considered “reasonable and customary.” This left many with significant unpaid medical expenses.

Recognizing the need for a better solution, Karl and Keith partnered with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network to create a sustainable health benefits program. To support this effort, they established the Lutheran Church Michigan District Association (LCMD Assoc.) and its administering agency — now known as Lutheran Benefits Group.

Initially serving Lutheran churches and schools throughout Michigan, the agency quickly expanded. As the LCMD Assoc. grew, it began providing benefits and support to additional denominations — including Free Methodist and Wesleyan organizations — as well as other nonprofit groups.

Keith W. Mueller has served as President of Lutheran Benefits Group since 2003. In 2021, he was joined by his son, Jacob W. Mueller, marking the third generation of the Mueller family in the insurance industry. Together, they continue the agency’s mission of providing trusted, faith-based benefits solutions.

Today, Lutheran Benefits Group proudly serves a diverse range of clients — from churches, schools, and nonprofits to businesses, individuals, and Medicare members — always with a focus on service and integrity.
